Project

The project

Dune Med Energy was founded by 7Seas to develop wind and solar generation in the Tataouine region. It has an agreement for land rights across approximately 25,000 hectares, an area with an assessed long-term potential of up to 7 GW of wind and solar generation.

The development is planned in phases, aligned with permitting, grid and market conditions. Initial phases are intended to supply Tunisia’s electricity system and to establish operating experience.

Tunisia

Wind and solar in southern Tunisia complement each other

The Tataouine area has wind and solar resources that produce at different hours and in different seasons. Combining them allows projects to be designed to generate across the day and night. The location is well suited to large-scale wind development and could in time complement Italy’s need for additional wind generation to balance its electricity system.

The development area is near planned transmission investment in southern Tunisia. Coordinated generation and grid development would allow projects to proceed in phases as network capacity becomes available.

Creating value for Tunisia

Tunisia generates almost all of its electricity from natural gas, most of it imported. Once operating, wind and solar projects in Tataouine are expected to replace part of that gas, cutting the import bill and the electricity system’s exposure to fuel prices. Construction and operation would also require local labour, infrastructure and specialist services, at a level depending on the capacity and schedule of each phase.

Dune Med Energy is discussing grid strategy with the relevant Tunisian public bodies and with STEG, the national electricity utility. The development is planned in phases so that each stage can respond to domestic electricity and development priorities.

Relationship with 7Seas Connect

Dune Med Energy and 7Seas Connect are independent developments with separate investment and delivery plans. Dune Med Energy is intended to add renewable generation to Tunisia’s electricity system. Additional interconnection could later support electricity trade with Italy when market, grid and regulatory conditions allow.

7Seas Connect is developing a 1,200 MW high-voltage direct-current interconnector between Tunisia and Sicily. 7seasconnect.it →

A 7Seas project

7Seas

7Seas originates and develops energy projects in Italy and the Mediterranean. With iLS Studio it originated and co-founded the five floating offshore wind projects that became the 2.7 GW Divento portfolio, now developed by the Divento partnership led by Plenitude, CDP and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). 7Seas founded 7Seas Connect, 7Seas Storage and Dune Med Energy.
